I g6+-Unit activity from neurons of hypothalamic feeding and satiety mechanisms, and from adjacent hypothalamic regions was recorded in anesthetized dogs with surgically exposed hypothalamus, and in Flaxedil-immobilized cats in which a stereotaxic approach was made. Intravenous glucose or insulin, or combinations of both, were given and the changes in spike activity observed. Glucose estimations were done on blood samples taken from femoral artery and vein. In starved animals the unit activity in satiety center neurons was slower than that obtained from feeding center neurons. Frequency of spikes recorded from satiety center neurons increased and that of feeding center neurons decreased significantly after glucose was given intravenously, while spike activity from these centers showed a reverse pattern of response after intravenous insulin. No significant changes were observed from other hypothalamic and cortical neurons. Activity of neurons of the satiety center did not show a significant correlation with blood glucose level per se, but a better correlation was found between unit activity and the A-V glucose difference. It is suggested that the satiety center is activated by increased glucose utilization in the body.

متن کاملEffect of repeated transcranial magnetic stimulation during epileptogenesis on spontaneous activity of hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons in rats
Introduction: Considering the antiepileptogenic effects of repeated transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), the effect of rTMS applied during amygdala kindling on spontaneous activity of hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons was investigated. Materials and Methods: A tripolar electrode was inserted in basolateral amygdala of Male Wistar rats. After a recovery period, animals received daily kindl...
متن کاملMicroinfusion of Bupropion Inhibits Putative GABAergic Neuronal Activity of the Ventral Tegmental Area
Introduction: The most common interpretation for the mechanisms of antidepression is the increase of the brain monoamine levels such as dopamine (DA). The increase of DA can reduce depression but it can also decrease the monoamine release because of autoreceptor inhibition. Although bupropion can decrease the dopamine release, there is evidence about stimulatory effects of chronic application o...
متن کاملThe firing rate of neurons in the nucleus cuneiformis in response to formalin in male rat
Introduction: Although formalin-induced activity in primary afferent fibers and spinal dorsal horn is well described, the midbrain neural basis underlying each phase of behavior in formalin test has not been clarified. The present study was designed to investigate the nucleus cuneiformis (CnF) neuronal responses during two phases after subcutaneous injection of formalin into the hind paw...
متن کاملThe effect of morphine on some electrophysiological parameters of paragigantocellularis and locus coeruleus nuclei interconnections
As one of the most important diffused brain modulatory systems, the nucleus locus coeruleus (LC) receives most of its afferents from the nucleus paragigantocellularis (PGi) and plays a major role in the control of drug dependence and some emotional and exciting states. For detailed investigation of the effect of morphine on relationship between these two brain stem nuclei, the activity of the r...
